Italian Defense Minister Lorenzo Guerini visited Beirut Monday to discuss the implementation of Italy\u2019s Cedar initiative which aims at offering medical and humanitarian support to the Lebanese following the explosion and the significant rise of coronavirus cases Lebanon is witnessing.<\/p>\n
\u201cAfter the accident that struck the country, the humanitarian relief operation “Emergenza Cedri” is another sign that reflects the strong relationship between Italy and Lebanon and the fraternal cooperation with the Lebanese people who are living this great suffering\u201d Guerini said in a statement following his meeting with President Michel Aoun. He expressed his hope in the formation of a new cabinet capable of effectively managing the reconstruction process and meeting the needs of the people.<\/p>\n
Guerini examined as well the field hospital established at the Lebanese University campus in Hadath, accompanied by the Italian Ambassador to Lebanon Nicoletta Bombardiere. It\u2019s composed of specialized army personnel of the same category that were operating in Italy during COVID-19 emergency. The completion of the field hospital is expected by the end of the month.<\/p>\n
He also stopped by the location of the explosion in the port of Beirut, and went on board of the San Giusto ship to welcome the Italian personnel who arrived to Lebanon.<\/p>\n
The military ship ETNA also arrived earlier on Monday carrying donations of electro-medical apparatus, medical and personal protective equipment that will all be granted to the damaged Saint Georges Hospital.<\/p>\n
In an interview with General Stefano Del Col, Guerini confirmed that the Italian Ministry of Defense will keep contributing not only in terms of human resources but also in terms of financial, logistical support and training during the challenging economic, social, and health circumstances the country is going through.<\/p>\n
