It is a true honor to celebrate with you today the Italian National Day\u2014a moment of national pride for Italy, and a meaningful occasion to reflect on the enduring and multifaceted ties between Italy and Lebanon.<\/p>\n
We chose to host this anniversary at the Sursock Museum, created by a family with historic ties to Italy and a symbol of Lebanon\u2019s rich cultural heritage. This building, which we were proud to help restore following the devastating port explosion five years ago, stands today as a testament to our friendship and the resilience of Lebanon.<\/p>\n
This day invites not only celebration, but also reflection\u2014on our histories, our shared values, and the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. As we commemorate Italy\u2019s post-Second World War recovery, we are reminded of how nations can emerge stronger from adversity through perseverance, unity and long-term vision.<\/p>\n
In the aftermath of the war, Italy faced daunting challenges: a fragile economy, widespread destruction, and significant political divides. The recovery we achieved was not solely the result of external assistance\u2014it was built on internal resolve: strategic investments in industry and education and a renewed commitment to democratic governance. A cornerstone of this transformation was on the aftermath of the war the institutional change from monarchy to republic through a referendum which we commemorate today. 18 months later by the adoption of a new constitution\u2014anchored in the rule of law, social justice, and civic engagement.<\/p>\n
Lebanon also stands today at a pivotal moment. The recent conflict, combined with persistent economic and institutional difficulties, has created a complex and demanding environment. But as Italy\u2019s journey has shown, recovery is possible\u2014even in the most trying circumstances\u2014when it is guided by collective effort, institutional integrity, and the will to reform.<\/p>\n
This National Day is not only a tribute to Italy\u2019s past, but also a gesture of hope for the future\u2014yours and ours. Let it serve as a reminder that renewal is within reach, even in the face of profound hardship, when citizens and institutions come together with shared purpose.<\/p>\n
A crucial foundation for Lebanon\u2019s recovery will be the restoration of trust\u2014trust in public services, in the financial system, and most importantly, in State institutions. Transparency, accountability and long-term strategic planning will be key. So too will be the spirit and entrepreneurship of the Lebanese people\u2014qualities that have been vividly demonstrated throughout Lebanon\u2019s history.<\/p>\n
The year 2025 opened under promising auspices. The end of the leadership vacuum has brought renewed political momentum. The election of a President, the formation of a government, the start of initial financial reforms, the conduct of municipal elections and the merit-based appointment of senior officials\u2014all signal a commitment to re-establishing governance and restoring public confidence.<\/p>\n
Italy welcomes these developments and encourages Lebanon\u2019s leadership to capitalize on the momentum and to continue along this path\u2014to strengthen its credibility not only with international partners, but above all with the Lebanese people, who have long awaited meaningful change.<\/p>\n
In the early weeks of the new government\u2019s mandate, I had the privilege of meeting with all the newly appointed ministers. After completing my 24 visits, I was able to perceive the dedication, responsibility and skills each of them brings to the country.<\/p>\n
Italy remains fully committed to standing with Lebanon. During the most difficult moments of last year, amid a challenging conflict and its consequences, my country allocated 27 million Euro in support of ongoing emergency efforts.<\/p>\n
We will continue to accompany Lebanon in addressing the challenges ahead\u2014whether in the fields of security, economic revitalization, strengthening institutions, or upholding the rule of law.<\/p>\n
We sincerely hope for the renewal of UN Security Council Resolution 1701. Italy, which plays a leading role in UNIFIL, remains committed to supporting peace and stability. We also hope to see an end to ongoing unilateral violations of the truce, and the beginning of a broader process of reconciliation\u2014one that leads to the full restoration of Lebanese sovereignty across the entire national territory.<\/p>\n
Our longstanding and unwavering support for the LAF has never faltered. Through the bilateral military mission and the coordination of the Military Technical Committee, we support a key Lebanese institution that is essential to leading Lebanon into a new era of peace and security.<\/p>\n
Now allow me to address the Italian citizens present here today:<\/p>\n
Desidero rivolgere un sincero ringraziamento alla componente militare e alle organizzazioni della societ\u00e0 civile. Due realt\u00e0 che, pur avendo ruoli e approcci differenti, operano fianco a fianco in Libano con l\u2019obiettivo comune di contribuire allo sviluppo e alla stabilit\u00e0 di un Paese a cui l\u2019Italia \u00e8 profondamente legata, come testimoniano anche i frequenti contatti istituzionali ad alto livello.<\/p>\n
Un saluto cordiale va anche ai rappresentanti religiosi qui presenti e alla comunit\u00e0 italo-libanese, sempre pi\u00f9 numerosa, che incarna i forti legami storici, culturali e familiari tra i nostri due Paesi.<\/p>\n
