Death

Death Registration in Italy of an Italian citizen resident abroad.

An Italian citizen’s death certificate must be registered in Italy.

In order to register it, it is necessary to take an appointment online through the platform (piattaforma online prenot@mi) and submit the following documents:

  • Death certificate issued by the competent Civil Status Office of the country of residence, duly legalized and translated into Italian;
  • documents regarding the deceased’s citizenship: identity card, Italian passport or certificate of Italian citizenship;
  • Request registration form, duly filled, of the Death certificate and the simultaneous removal from the AIRE registry by the Italian municipality.

Alternatively, once the death certificate has been legalized by the Competent Authorities, it may be directly submitted to the Italian municipality of the last known residence of the deceased (see Art. 12, paragraph 11, Presidential Decree 396/2000).
