Please be informed that the Budget Law for the year 2026 has introduced some amendments to the legislation on citizenship, in particular with regard to acquisition “per beneficio di legge”.
As of 1 January 2026, applications and the related declarations submitted by parents—at least one of whom is a citizen by birth—of minors born abroad who do not automatically acquire Italian citizenship, pursuant to Article 4, paragraph 1-bis, letter b) of Law No. 91/1992, may be filed within three years (and no longer within one year) from the minor’s birth or from the later date on which filiation, including adoptive filiation, by the Italian citizen is established.
Furthermore, the above-mentioned declarations, where the applications are submitted as of 1 January 2026, are exempt from payment of the €250 contribution.
