ENERGHEIA AWARD LEBANON 2013: RIMA ABDEL FATTAH IS AWARDED FIRST PRIZE  

In the framework of the promotion of the Italian language and culture, the Dante Alighieri Society, coordinator of the literary contest Energheia organized under the patronage of the Embassy of Italy in Beirut in collaboration with the Institut Français, the Safadi Foundation and the British Council announces that Rima Abdel Fattah, with the short story Resurrection, won the 2013 call of the contest, Lebanese section. The author has been awarded with a one-week stay in Italy and with the publication of her winning, breathtaking, text. 2nd prize (in assessment order) awarded to Marco Fornasaris with the short story Una giornata con lo scrittore M. Corona (One day with the writer M. Corona); concerning the comics section of the contest, special mention from the Italian jury to Ghina Merheb for her It’s month’s first.


In the past calls of the contest, three young Lebanese writers were awarded for their short stories whose common thread is the complicated equation of everyday life in a country – Lebanon – still longing for stability and durable peace. Closely connected with the geopolitics of Lebanon, 2013 Energheia contest has been proposed also to the staff of UNIFIL peacekeeping forces in southern Lebanon, rewarding us with the story of the runner-up, a lieutenant colonel belonging to Base Millevoi of Shamaa. On the occasion of the awarding ceremony, which took place in Matera at the D. Ridola Archaeological Museum on September 14th, the strong link between the Land of Cedars and Italy has been strengthened more and more.


During the awards night the Jury, composed this year of the writer and poet Davide Rondoni, of the director of the contemporary music festival Time Zones Gianluigi Trevisi, of the writer and filmmaker Manlio Castagna also awarded the prize Energheia España to Pablo Lobo’s short story Los que huyen (The fleeing), the Energheia Award for the best Italian short story to Rosa Scarlatella’s Ciao, sono Sally (Hello, my name is Sally), the Energheia Cinema Award, the best story for a short film to Teodoro Lorenzo, with Amigdala (Amygdala). Rewarded, finally, the runners-up of the web section of the contest, whose stories have been previously published in the online journal of the National Union of Writers.


At the end of the ceremony, the 18th edition of the book The Tales of Energheia was presented, an anthology of 2012 runners-up and winning stories that will be sent free of charge to all the libraries and schools in Italy.


Following the success of the XIX edition, the next event is scheduled for the coming autumn, with the announcement regarding the new edition of the contest.
